My special guest is well experienced in this topic. Her success in realizing her goals is remarkable. It is our good fortune to welcome Patrice Hernandez, a bestselling author, a speaker, and a master in creating vision boards. Hi, Patrice. Welcome to the show.

Patrice Hernandez [01:15]:

Hi Rosie, thank you so much for having me on today.

Rosie [01.18]:

Oh, it is my pleasure. My pleasure. We had the opportunity to meet each other last year during the Austin Businesswoman Award Ceremony and it was fantastic!

Patrice Hernandez [01:31]:

Yes, it was an amazing experience. It was because of my oldest Dana being nominated.

Rosie [01:36]:

And what a talented artist. I am amazed by her art, her talent, and the way she expresses that art in a visual way. In that process of getting to know you, I was very happy to know all the things that you have accomplished. Tell me how your life journey has led you to where you are.

Patrice Hernandez [01:59]:

Thank You so much for all of that. I'll just say that first. I grew up with my grandmother raising me and learning all of the experiences that she had as a single mom, helped me to make decisions for myself on what I wanted for my future, what I wanted for my life, and my family. Growing up, we didn't have money, not a lot at all, but she did what she could to take care of us. So I learned so much from her as an adult I spent time in the military. Once I finished my career in the military, I became a stay-at-home mom, which I did that for about 13 years. I also homeschool my girls. My husband and I became entrepreneurs and we opened up our own business. Now, during all of that time, I've also been a writer. I have a book called “Transitions” and it's basically a collection of inspirational stories from women in business who have discovered their power through life's challenges. In my story, I talk about my transition from becoming a stay-at-home mom, to going back into the work field and becoming an entrepreneur.

Rosie [03:00]:

It's a book that can inspire and other women can reference to know that you're not alone going through the process. We support each other and we make every day, the best day that we possibly can. And in making that day, today we are going to talk about the vision board. I am so excited about our conversations because I am a believer. So share with us your experiences and the importance of having goal setting in a visual way.

Patrice Hernandez [03:31]:

I love your enthusiasm and excitement for vision boards. I have been working on a vision board for the past seven years. Each time I do a vision board, I always learn something more, something new. It's just amazing. It gives you the creative outlet so that you can sort your thoughts and goals and what you really want to have in life. And so a vision board is basically a visual representation of the goals you'd like to reach. So those things can be what you want to acquire and what you want to accomplish. And ways that you can do that is by posting images, words, and quotes on a board. When you look at your board, it should be something that immediately inspires you, that lifts you up, and encourages you to push harder towards working your goals. Now, what I like to always tell people is to think about what you want your life to look like. Are you looking for a more simplistic life that encompasses slow living? That's what I am focused on this year is slowing down and living more in the moment. But what does your vision look like for your life? What do you want? So that's why I really love vision boards is because it gives me the opportunity to really take a look into my current life and decide what changes I want to make myself happier, healthier, healed, those things.

Rosie [04:42]:

Because, of what we do accumulate over time, then we are that much more closer to realizing the goals that we have set for ourselves. It's a beautiful journey. And I will invite you who are listening to just take a chance, take a chance. Maybe you are the first one who engaged in this. And I know because I grew up and I did not see anyone doing vision boards. I heard a conversation, I said, hmm, I have nothing to lose. Why not? Let's give it a try. And from that point on, it was something that now I do every single year and every year it excites me. Because I have seen that if anything, I have learned so much in the process. And then you learn so much more about yourself.

Patrice Hernandez [05:28]:

The first time I did a vision board, it was with my girlfriends as basically to get together and just have fun and catch up. We were like, oh, this is what we want, and didn't really take it seriously. And so we had our vision boards and we worked on it, had our food, food, and our drinks. But over time I realized there had to be something more to these boards besides just taking a picture and putting it on social media and saying, oh, I did a vision board. No, there had to be so much more to it for me. And so I started to dive in and I started to research more about how to take advantage of my vision board and how to really get the things I wanted. And so I started learning and researching and I found that, okay, let me start to put some of these things into practice and see if they actually work. The one year that I decided to take it seriously was the, that everything on my board started happening.

Rosie [06:19]:

This is so exciting when you see your goals happening. And there are different ways of having it. I personally prefer the one that I can touch and that I can see every day. For instance, mine, I've been doing this for years and the one I have is in my closet. So when I go every morning is there and every evening before going to bed. So I see it at least twice a day. Now there are other ways of doing it digitally and things like that. What has been one of the ways that you suggest has been bringing very good results for those who engage in a vision board?

Patrice Hernandez [06:54]:

You are so right. There are many different ways that you can do a vision board. But one of my most favorite ways is to put it on a mini-poster board. This way you can move it to those high traffic areas for yourself that you're going to always look at. So for me, my vision board hangs in my bathroom on a wall. Now in this bathroom, I can look into my mirror and I can read it backwards to myself while I'm from pairing for the day. But I can also turn around while I'm still getting ready and I can read more of those. So that would be one of my most favorite ways to do it. And of course, like you said, you can always do a digital vision board. You can have it on your screen. Then with this way, when you are looking at your phone, it pops up and it's right there. You want to put what you want into the universe. And so thinking about if you have it on your refrigerator. How many times do you go in the refrigerator a day, so that you can actually look at your vision? Your subconscious can start to really soak in what you're wanting.

Rosie [07:48]:

And as far as the way that it looks, what are your favorite things that you use to bring that visual to life?

Patrice Hernandez [07:55]:

What I love to put on my vision board are things that I want within this year.  I know that some things may not happen this year, but that's the most important to me is like, what do I see happening? So for me, I will use my writing board because I have it right here in front of me.  It talks about the script of your life. And so it's just talking about the story of my life and what I want is I'm wanting to find inner peace and reducing stress. I want to be able to inspire others. I want to make sure I'm making magical moments and those happen every day. Those simple, small things that we take for granted. Those should be part of our magical moments each day. A lot of what I use is magazines to help me construct what I want to put on my board.

And I'm looking for specific words. Because I've already sat down and I've worked on what I want my goal to be what I want to accomplish for this year. So I know what words specifically I'm looking for. So look for those specifics of what you want. If you know that you want to lose weight, I'll use that for an example and get healthy and you know, what you want your body to look like and resemble then use that. Don't use just anything to put on your board, because then you're going to focus on the wrong thing. You want to focus on what you genuinely truly want and what you're going to work on.

Rosie [09:07]:

Yes, and not to be afraid to think big. Because that is also a part of the vision that you will have for yourself, for the future.

Patrice Hernandez [09:16]:

Right. One of the biggest things you want to do is to begin to change your mindset. That is huge! Growing up, you'll hear a lot of people be negative and put those negative things out there into the universe. And then you find yourself being negative as well. So just changing your mindset to something that's positive, changing how you speak as well, also has a huge influence. So saying I can't do this. Okay, well then you know what? You can't do this, but if you're starting to change that mindset and saying, I can do this, I can see that happening. Yes, I am healthy. Yes, I am wealthy. Yes. I am healed. Start to change how you speak, start to change how you think. And then that also comes with when you are initially doing vision board is sitting down to make a plan on what you really can envision and what you really can see.

Rosie [10:01]:

And it is the way that we talk to ourselves. Like you said, those key phrases, those keywords that we use, we need practice actually to use it because it's not something that a lot of people are exposed to on a regular basis. There's a lot of negativity. So you need to filter all those things, creating that blueprint and that takes practice. So you have to be patient and you have to take interest in researching and analyzing and customize it to where you are now because it's not a matter of being frustrated. I want all that and it's not happening, no. Start from where you are, but then start dreaming taking it from there and another step and another step. And next thing you know that vision board years from now is going to look so different. But the foundation is there and it's you and your mindset and also is so good when we are spending time with people that have action plans that you, yes, we can do it. The conversations are so much more comfortable when you're talking about vision boards. They're like, oh, let me tell you, I have mine this year and it's just different, isn't it?

Patrice Hernandez [11:08]:

Yes, it is. It's amazing when you spend time with people who have that same mindset as you. So when you're putting yourself with your friends who believe in doing a vision board, it's like you're backing each other up and saying, I believe that's going to happen for you too.

Rosie [11:23]:

Yes, and one of the things that we have in common is traveling. If you see my vision board, it has a lot of images about different places that I love to go. And in my case, what I do throughout the years is that I get these bright stickers and I put it on the ones that I have accomplished. And then when I see it, it's like, yes, another one came to life. One of the trips that we have in common was that 50th Anniversary in Disney. Was that part of the vision board?

Patrice Hernandez [11:54]:

Oh my goodness. Yes. Disney is on my vision board every year!

Rosie [11:58]:

Every year!

Patrice Hernandez [12:00]:

Every year, my girls and I love it. And so this past year, we were able to take a mother-daughter trip. And that was our first trip taking where it was just the three of us. And it was an amazing experience. And you, it will be on there again for this year too.

Rosie [12:15]:

For this year too. Yes. I renew that and it gets bigger and bolder.  In my case, it was a girls and mom trip also from Texas to California. And California is all over my vision board because I'm from the islands. So the combination of the mountains and the oceans is just something that I cannot even explain what that makes me feel. And I told my girls and they're in their twenties, but they'll always be my girls. Okay. This year we are going to the coast, let's go to California. And I had that on my vision board for years. And every year I renew that and last summer I was able to make it a reality. And that's an important aspect that I want to talk to you about because sometimes it takes years before we achieve those goals. But it’s important not to lose our interest in taking action to make it happen.

Patrice Hernandez [13:13]:

Yes, that is correct. There is no timeframe on how everything is going to happen, that you put on your board. So not everything is going to happen at the same time. You just have to make sure you're trusting the process. And then you're accepting when it happens and making sure you're being thankful for it in advance. So being thankful for it goes a long way. Even on my vision boards that I have around the house, each vision board has a saying on it about giving thanks. It's because I want to make sure I'm always giving thanks before I receive what it is that I have put on the board. And I feel like this is more of putting it into your life and manifesting it.

Rosie [13:50]:

Yes. Being grateful to be flexible, to be hopeful, to be open, and also taking advantage of opportunities. Now, getting out of the comfort zone, how important it is to achieve the goals that we have?

Patrice Hernandez [14:05]:

Oh yes. It is so important to make sure, one that you're giving gratitude. But two, you're going to have to go after the things that you put on that vision board. It's not just going to fall in your lap. Have you prepared yourself for it? So it's important to ask. It's important to believe it's important to receive it, but you also are going to have to go after what goals you have put on your board.

Rosie [14:25]:

So Patrice is there anything else that you want to share with our listeners that can benefit from taking that final step in starting some that maybe they haven't done it before, or if they have, they have now even a more improved mindset towards it.

Patrice Hernandez [14:44]:

What I'd like to share is just make sure that you're being intentional with what you want on your board. You don't have to spend a lot of money to create your vision board. You can use your phone; you can use your computer. If you don't want to do paper, you can do it digitally. But if you do want to do it by paper, you have that option as well. All you need is paper scissors, glue, and whatever it is that you want to put on your board. So you can use magazines and newspaper clippings, and you can print out words from the printer as well. Just make sure that you are structuring what you're going to put on your board. That means if you're a person who knows that I want a garden, I find something that has gardening with it. If you know that you want a new job, you're going to be specific about what that job is that you want. So that you're attracting what it is, you truly want. Hang it up in a spot where you're going to look at it every day. You know, that saying that goes out of sight out of mind. Yeah. It really does happen. And that when you're finished with it, that you go ahead and create a new goal and a new vision so that you can continue to evolve and grow.

Rosie [15:50]:

That is so meaningful to be intentional. So now that you have created your board, what is next?

Patrice Hernandez [15:58]:

So there are several things that you can do after your vision board has manifested. You can cover it up with a sticky note and then you'll write the date on the picture once you've achieved that goal. And then you can cover it up with a new picture. This is basically so that you can start creating your new goal and new vision. You can also add the date next to the picture. Once you've realized what your goal is and completed it, it's great to be able to reflect on what you've accomplished and when you achieve each goal at the end of the year. So this helps you to go back and look at that board and see, okay, I did a lot this year, a lot more than I thought I would do. If you have accomplished all of the goals on your board, then guess what? It's time to make a new board. I don't care if that's the middle of July, make the new board. So this way you can work on your new vision and improve and get ready for the new things that will happen in your life.

Rosie [16:49]:

Now that we have shared with our listeners and thank you so much for bringing all your knowledge into it as a writer, what is next for you?

Patrice Hernandez [16:58]:

I am working on a book with my girls for the past couple of years. We're probably about 75% done with the story aspect of it, but it's going to be a children's story. And it's all about traveling. We're excited about that. It's what we'd love to do. So we wanted to write a story for children who can understand the traveling aspect of the world, so they can travel without even having to leave their homes.

Rosie [17:20]:

Beautiful. And again, Congratulations on your book “Transitions” is a beautiful collaboration of remarkable women that can inspire you in your daily life.
